What: A Fashionable Jeweler With a Conscience by Guy Trebay
Where: New York Times, Fashion & Style Section
I love “good news” stories like this. Guy Trebay reports on how British jeweler, Pippa Small, attaches meaning to her work, above and beyond the jewelry itself.
Once an anthropologist before beginning to work as a jeweler, Ms. Small donates 15% of her jewelry profits to non-governmental organizations to help those in need. And the gold she uses for her pendants comes from a fair trade mine before it is turned into jewelry by a traditional goldsmith in Bolivia.
“Often it can seem as if ethical concerns lie at some equally long distance from fashion’s core interests; the surprise is discovering that this is not always so,” writes Trebay.
