Article Alert!

What: In Milan, Models Still Come in Only One Colour by Guy Trebay
Where: New York Times, Fashion & Style Section

It’s men’s Fashion Week right now in Milan, and while many of the clothes are black, few of the models are. The article discusses the lack of ethnic diversity in male models on the runway, which seems a step backwards from the cast of male models last summer for DSquared2. The same lack of diversity, unfortunately, is true for female models. Last season, Prada’s women’s line had its first black model, Jourdan Dunn, to walk the runway in, ahem, ten years. Guy Trebay makes an interesting contrast between Obama’s inauguration this week (today, actually) and a simultaneous lack of ethnic minorities on the runway.

It didn’t used to be news that most of the models on the runway were Caucasian (perhaps in part because there used to be more ethnic diversity in modelling in the past). But I feel it is a good thing to make something like this news because it calls people’s attention — and, hopefully, designer’s attention –to just how unfortunate and unacceptable it is not to have an ethically diverse cast of models.

Change is one of the biggest buzzwords in America right now. Let’s hope the fashion and modelling industry take note. It’s a new day, after all.
