Article Alert!

What: The Return of the Interview Suit by Eric Wilson
Where: New York Times, Fashion & Style Section

With the economy in a downturn, people looking to keep their jobs, or interview for a new one if they’ve been let go, should note that more formal attire is considered appropriate. Eric Wilson explains why and offers up tips from designers and other fashion industry experts. The article is focused only on women’s attire (sorry, guys). As expected, there is reference to Michelle Obama and Sarah Palin (who, despite all the spending controversy had some frugal fashions in her wardrobe, too). The visuals that accompany the article are very helpful.

What should you take away from this article?

How you present your image to a current or potential employer says a lot about you. And in a bad economy looking professional and polished is important. Some practical advice: stay away from patterns; if wearing a white shirt, make sure it is new so it looks as bright as possible; avoid all-black or pastel-coloured suits; if you’re not a suit-person, try a cardigan and high-waisted skirt; if you’re comfortable with it, add colour, but not too much or too bright; and, don’t forget to may attention to your shoes and bag, too. It’s a toss up between whether a pant suit or skirt suit is better, so you make the call. Pay attention to what is considered professional and appropriate for your particular career field. You want to look memorable, but you don’t want your outfit to overpower you. How you dress matters, so put the time and effort into a great interview outfit.
