What: Buying Face Cream? Grab a Glossary by Natasha Singer
Where: New York Times, Fashion & Style, October 1st 2008

Singer has written an interesting article about scientific words currently being used to market skin care products. She offers up quotes from everyday women, beauty company spokeswomen, and academic researchers who touch on the science and research behind terms like “pro-collagen,” “bio-stimulating,” and “micro-lift.”

What should you take away from this article?

You can still have fun at the beauty counter and feel pampered when you apply a new, rich nightcream. But remember that cosmetics and skin care companies are businesses selling products. They advertise their products in ways, and with language, that make them appealing to consumers. This is how a business works. And this is nothing new. You, dear readers, need to be informed and educated consumers. Do your research and find out what those baffling terms mean before you drop big bucks for them. If their meaning meets your skin’s needs, then go for it. If not, find a product that does. Hope in a jar isn’t going to make you more beautiful — knowledge is.
