What: Pretty Politics by Juliette Baxter
Where: Flare Magazine, October 2008 Issue
This article gives an interesting look at what some of the research says regarding where beauty gets you in life compared to real-world examples that go against such research findings. For example, attention is drawn to research that suggests attractive people are paid more and receive more attention in most areas of life — this is challenged by making reference to unconvential beauties like Sarah Jessica Parker. Kudos to Baxter for thinking critically about what beauty means in the context of our daily lives. This is exactly the kind of thing that Belle IQ is all about.
What should you take away from this article?
When you hear of new research, try to think of real-world examples that both fit the findings and seem to go against them. If you aren’t sure that you believe the findings, find out more about the study and that may help to answer some of your questions. Most importantly, though, give individuals the benefit of the doubt: don’t label someone with stereotypes based on their level of attractiveness. Find out who the real person is and base your conclusions about them on that.
